In the late s, the renowned American jazz pianist, composer, and arranger John Hicks formed one of the most influential ensembles consisting out of musicians that had played music at the highest level all their lives and gained their status as both stand-alone artists and important sidemen.

Each of them had participated in many of jazz's great moments and all shared the ability, documented on many albums, to inspire their fellow musicians to even greater heights. On this album Is That So? He served as a leader on more than 30 albums and played as a sideman on more than other recordings.

In the early '70s he taught jazz history and improvisation at Southern Illinois University before resuming his career as a recording artist. He then toured with Sam Cooke and would later go on to work with Curtis Mayfield. The album was produced by John Hicks and Timeless Records owner Wim Wigt and is a remarkable outing of advanced musicianship by three jazz-giants in their prime, delivering an inspirational gem of an album.

Is That So? Expect supercharged Post Bop with striking notes, no-holds-barred musicianship, high swinging solos, screaming choruses and plenty of solid virtuosity to spare. The up tempo none stop Latin beat is complimented by the terrific drum solos of Idris Muhammad and the rhythmic bass stokes of Ray Drummond.

On election day , when I saw that there was a good chance the state of Georgia might go blue, I came up with an idea: to record an album of Georgia- related songs as a thank you to the state and donate the money to a Georgia based non-profit organization. I will admit my motivations were a bit selfish. The songs on this album are some of my favorite Georgia-related songs, but the tracklist is not meant to be comprehensive.

I hope you enjoy listening to these recordings as much as we enjoyed making them. Keep listening to good music and fighting the good fight. Madison Carnival of Losers, Pt. Agreed that, providing properly calibrated gear, LPs should survive many dozens of plays without exhibiting any degradation.

I suspect that any degradation in sound over the years would be more than offset by the high frequency hearing loss that would accompany the passage of time Location: Maryland.

I recorded the first pass and the last pass to the PC and couldn't measure or hear any differences. High-frequency response and noise levels were the same for the first and last passes. Years ago, an audio magazine Stereo Review or Hi Fidelity, if I recall correctly set a turntable to repeat the last few minutes of a side and they ran the test continuously for many, many hours.

With a line-contact stylus, they were unable to detect any groove wear or damage. But don't count on that happening with a conical stylus! To sum up, even after 48, passes, the line-contact stylus of the Super OM did not do any appreciable damage to the vinyl. But other stylus profiles, like ellipticals, started wearing down the groove after only 60 to passes.

The vast majority of 7-inch singles will be 45 RPM, and inch records Vinyl comes in different sizes mainly based on how much music is contained on the record. A standard 7-inch single is smaller than a full-length album because it contains less music, and is intended to be less expensive. But there's also a limit to how much sound can be crammed onto a side of vinyl of any size before the quality of the audio deteriorates because the grooves are too narrow to contain all of the detail of the sound recording.

This is why many records released as a single CD have to be issued as a double album on vinyl — inch sides typically top out around 22 minutes, but albums designed for CD typically spill over 60 minutes — and why many 7-inch singles feature edits of songs that are normally extended over the five-minute mark.

But this limitation can be turned to an advantage in that putting less music on a larger side can improve sound quality, which is part of why many singles designed for DJ use are pressed as and inch records to accommodate extended mixes while allowing for excellent sound quality.

Oh, anywhere they sell it, really. If you don't live near a record store, you can't go wrong with Amazon since it stocks a wide range of new vinyl at reasonable prices and will ship anywhere.

There are other good online shops — Insound , Amoeba , Other Music , GEMM , Turntable Lab — and you can buy vinyl from the official websites of many artists and most independent labels. A lot of Urban Outfitters shops will have a small vinyl section as well. If you do have record stores in your area, by all means, buy records from them! Most record stores will also have used bins where you can buy old albums for low prices.

Buying up used records this way, or at record fairs or garage sales, is a great way to build up a solid collection without spending a lot of money. This holds true of garage sales, thrift shops, flea markets, and record fairs.

Just be careful the records aren't scratched up. If you're looking for specific titles that are either rare or out of print, eBay is definitely your new best friend. A lot of new albums and singles are pressed on colored vinyl. Though some audiophiles dislike this and strongly prefer black vinyl because the carbon black added to the plastic used for pressing makes it slightly more durable, it will sound pretty much the same as standard black vinyl and often looks very, very pretty.

If you care about aesthetics, colored vinyl is a major bonus , and you might end up going out of your way to get the colored pressing of new albums since they are often produced in limited amounts.

Most new albums, particularly those released by independent labels, will be very well made and sound great on even a mediocre stereo system. A lot of new records will have some sticker announcing that it's on " gram" vinyl, and that's a good thing, especially if you're an audiophile. The thicker, heavier vinyl will degrade more slowly than a thinner pressing and the records will stand up to repeat play a little better. That said, all vinyl degrades a tiny bit every time you play it.

That's just the way it is. You should be wary of new reissues of old albums on vinyl. In many cases, the master is made from the most recent CD of the title because the record label does not have access to the original analog master. If you're into the "warmth" factor, this totally defeats the point of having the recording in this format — you are basically just buying a lesser, imperfect version of a CD.

If you're unsure about whether a new reissue is sourced from CD, just do a bit of research; you can usually find out online somewhere.

If you have the option of finding an original vinyl pressing of the album, you should just do that. If you simply want to have a particular album on vinyl and this is your only option, then you shouldn't fret too much about this stuff, and just go for it. If you are planning to acquire vinyl copies of your favorite albums of all time, you should know that many records either were never released in the format, or were released in very small numbers and are now out of print.

Sun Daze decided to plan out a record over about 8 months total with Different Folk, who uses a pressing company called Gotta Grooze based out of Ohio to press the vinyl. Sun Daze said the vinyl, aside from being a gift or collectible, makes their music serious enough to prove and to sell.

It just made sense to make a record. Or you sell after a show. Sun Daze aims to sell out its first records by next summer, hopefully after returning to some live shows by then.
