The popularity among servicemen drew prostitutes to the area and fights were common place, especially between American troops and local servicemen. The park operated for over 40 years until tragedy struck. Sadly there was a fire on the Ghost Train ride which killed 5 children and 1 adult in which caused the park to be closed.

By the park was ready for a new lease at life; the construction and total refurbishment of rides was completed. In it was added to the Heritage Register. Today the park attracts roughly 1 million visitors per year, and continues to light up Sydney Harbour.
