The first known scientific study on reflexology presented in a peer-review journal, Obstetrics and Gynecology , was authored by Terry Oleson, Ph.
Flocco, of the American Academy of Reflexology, in This was a randomized controlled study of premenstrual symptoms treated with ear, hand and foot reflexology that demonstrated a significantly greater decrease in premenstrual symptoms for the women given true reflexology treatment versus women in the placebo group.
The research study concluded reflexology is indicated for women suffering from PMS. Flocco and his affiliates have continued to lead the way in reflexology research with their second-edition text, Reflexology Research: Anatomy of a Reflexology Research Study , along with a website assembling the most compelling collection of more than research studies from around the world.
Barbara A. Brower, a nationally certified reflexologist, set up the reflexology protocols and teamed up with chief investigator Gwen Wyatt, R. The participants who received reflexology treatments cited a significant improvement compared to the control group in their ability to walk, carry groceries and climb stairs. Women in the reflexology group had less trouble breathing compared to women in the control group, and also compared to women who received sham reflexology. During the study, there were no reports of any negative or adverse side effects to the use of reflexology.
Thirty-two Japanese volunteers participated in the study. Half of the subjects were told the base of the second toe was the eye reflex area and were also given pseudo-information that the base of the third toe was the shoulder reflex area. The other half of the subjects were told the opposite information. While massage , Reiki, and acupuncture all help to alleviate stress, they are very different types of therapies. Where reflexology is applied to specific points on your hands, feet and ears, massage is used on your whole body, says Rowe.
The type of touch and pressure used is different, too. During Reiki — another type of complementary therapy — there is no physical manipulation or pressure whatsoever. Instead, a light touch is used to heal the body. Acupuncture in similar to reflexology in that it uses 'certain points across the body to help you relax', says Rowe, but 'focuses on the entire body, rather than a specific area.
In reflexology and acupuncture , the body is divided into 12 pairs of energy zones, known as Meridians, explains O'Connell. So what does reflexology involve? On your initial consultation, your reflexologist may ask you about your medical history, health issues, lifestyle and diet, O'Connell explains. Sessions usually last 30 to 60 minutes and focus on the soles of your feet, 'unless you are very ticklish, in which case they can massage your hands,' O'Connell says.
Reflexologists do not claim to diagnose or cure any ailments. While reflexology is linked to a huge variety of potential benefits, only a few of them have been observed in scientific studies. These include reduced stress, anxiety and pain, and improvements in mood and general health. This is because your nervous system — which controls almost every aspect of your health and wellbeing — can be influenced by outside factors, including touch.
