Rather than being a matter of which solution is better, it is more important to select the solution that best fits a particular goal or determine what can be done with a combination of these services. Since the features of both XenDesktop and XenApp are managed with the same architecture, it is possible to implement both solutions and utilize them under a single management system. This compatibility is reflected not only in architecture, but also in licensing; XenDesktop Enterprise and Platinum licenses are both compatible with XenApp.

Thus, rather than viewing these as mutually exclusive solutions, making use of both XenDesktop and XenApp will result in more flexible functionality.

At the same time, since multiple configurations are being mixed together, it is also necessary to consider monitoring and operation management software that is compatible with these systems. XenDesktop and XenApp are both systems with increasingly high demands for promoting information security and telecommuting.

However, as mentioned above, such systematic components can be complicated, and are likely to affect system availability and performance. You need facts! While RDP as mostly a one-trick pony which we can do some adjustments in Group Policy to adjust the bandwidth usage or using regular QoS, it is still quite limited to the networking stack of the Windows NDIS architecture, which is not really adjustable.

So is RDP a good enough protocol for end-users? Sure it is! With RDS there is no straight forward solution do to image management. But a downside to this is that it requires Hyper-V in order to be able to do this using Server Manager. Citrix on the other hand has many more options in terms of management OS image management. So virtual machines and physical machines can be configured with PXE boot and stream and operating system down and store in RAM.

Doing updates to the image just requires an reboot. Another thing to think about here is the hypervisor support, where in most cases PXE supports both physical and virtual. A key benefit would be a reduction in storage costs.

When paired with Citrix Provisioning services, a single XenApp server can support around user sessions yet only require 15 GB of shared storage.

Compare that to a VDI solution that would require one terabyte of storage to host the same number of users. Further, you can simplify image management such as updating and patching. Just build a single server image with all the settings, policies, and requested applications. This vDisk can also be provisioned on demand.

When you need to deploy patches or updates, you can do so via centralized image management. XenDesktop uses technology similar to XenApp, but it works to virtualize and run desktops from a centralized location. Not only does this help to improve data security, but it significantly reduces the costs of running a farm of physical desktops. Each person is isolated in their connection to XenDesktop so there are no issues with performance or workload because each person has their own virtual machine and personal vDisk.
